Shofukuji stands near the summit of Mount Aonomineyama (336 m) in Matsuo-cho, Toba City, Mie, and is a temple of the Koyasan Shingon school, also known by the alternative name Sagagosho. Revered as a sacred peak for maritime protection, the temple draws devout worshippers from the fishing industry across Japan — from Hokkaido in the north to Kagoshima in the south. The mountain is believed to shelter all who face the perils of the open sea.
