History

Byakko

Kagoshima Ken Gokoku Jinja is a shrine enshrining the honored spirits of those from Kagoshima Prefecture who gave their lives for the nation from the Meiji Restoration through the Pacific War. Satsuma is a land that produced many patriots and was the birthplace of heroes of the Restoration, including Saigō Takamori. This shrine was founded for the purpose of consoling and honoring the war dead, and in its serene grounds overlooking Sakurajima, the spirits of the honored dead are perpetually enshrined. Visitors, together with gratitude for peace, are able to reflect upon the noble sacrifices of those who came before. Each year, the memorial service is attended by many bereaved families and citizens offering prayers for peace.
