Shinrakuji
About
History
Shinrakuji is an ancient temple of the Shingon Chisan sect located in Miyota Town, Nagano Prefecture. Founded in 586 (the first year of Emperor Yōmei's reign) by imperial decree to pray for the pacification of Mount Asama's eruption, it holds deep historical significance. The temple is renowned for its legend of the dragon god, whose spirit is said to have emerged from the temple's sacred spring to become the deity of Suwa Grand Shrine. The grounds feature a haiku monument by Matsuo Basho, and the three-story pagoda is designated as a Nagano Prefectural Cultural Property. Notable figures such as Prince Shotoku, Minamoto no Yoritomo, and Matsuo Basho are said to have made pilgrimages here. The Dragon God Festival held on the last Saturday of July draws large crowds each year.
