History

Byakko

Sakura Shrine in Kōbe, Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, was founded in 1869 (Meiji 2) by Matsudaira Yoshitomo, lord of the Tsuyama domain. It is dedicated to Emperor Go-Daigo and his loyal retainer Kojima Takanori, enshrining the spirit of imperial loyalty that inspired the loyalist movement at the end of the Edo period. The shrine grounds occupy the former site of the Innosho residence, which served as the provincial governor's estate during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. The entire precinct is designated as a National Historic Site, and approximately one hundred Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom beautifully each spring.
