History
This is a Tenmangu shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the kami of learning! As the Tenjin of Sendai, it is a shrine where many students and examination candidates visit to pray for success. Michizane was an excellent scholar, statesman, and poet of the Heian period. With his wisdom and scholarly power, he continues to support the academic pursuits of many people today. Situated in the Tsutsuji-ga-oka area of Sendai, it has been cherished as the center of learning in the Tohoku region. The beautifully blooming plum blossoms in the shrine grounds evoke the reverence for Michizane.
