History

Byakko

Shotoin (Komazan Shoteinin Shorakukan) in Hidaka, Saitama, was founded as the bodai temple of Prince Wakamitsu, the immigrant king Koma-no-Jakko who came from Goguryeo. The temple name derives from the Kangiten (joyful deity) that Wakamitsu brought from Goguryeo, now enshrined as the principal image. In 1345 the temple converted from Hosso to Shingon-shu Chisan-ha. In 1592 Tokugawa Ieyasu donated 15 koku of temple land in the Koma district. The temple preserves many cultural assets including a nationally designated Important Cultural Property bronze bell dated 1261.
