History

Byakko

This shrine originally stood in the Asahi district, a sacred Ise Shrine estate in the castle town of Kiyosu. In 1611, at the request of Tokugawa Ieyasu, it was relocated to its present site in the Nagoya castle town grid as a guardian shrine, also honoring his consort Princess Asahi. After the Great Fire of 1660, the broad Hirokoji avenue was developed along the shrine precinct, creating a bustling commercial district. Though destroyed in World War II, the shrine was rebuilt in 1953 and continues to stand quietly amid the Nishiki district.
