History
Hokiin is a Shingon-shu Buzan-ha temple located in Hase, Sakurai City, Nara, serving as a sub-temple of Hasedera. The principal image is a seated statue of the monk Tokudo Shonin. According to tradition, the temple was founded in 735 (the seventh year of Tenpyo) when Tokudo Shonin — who established both Hasedera and the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage of thirty-three sites — built a hermitage here. It was revived in 1695 as the founding hall of Hasedera by the monk Eiga. The precinct contains a thirteen-story stone pagoda marking the shonin's burial place and a stone step said to grant wishes to those who pray upon it. Hokiin is an additional sacred site on the Saigoku Pilgrimage, visited by pilgrims alongside Hasedera.
