History

Byakko

Chosen-in, a Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha temple located in Miyo, Koto Ward, Tokyo, was founded in 1607 (Keicho 12) at Kanda Yushima by the monk Shakuryozen. The temple was devastated by repeated fires during the Edo period, most notably the Great Meireki Fire of 1657. After relocating through Honjo Sarugae, it moved to its present site in Fukagawa Miyocho during the Genroku era (1688–1704). The principal image is a standing Amida Nyorai, and the temple holds two Koto Ward-designated tangible cultural properties: a wooden standing Amida Nyorai statue and a wooden standing Fudo Myoo statue.
