History
Tona-in is a beppaku honzan of Kinpusen Shugendo Buddhism, located on Mount Yoshino in Nara. Founded by En no Gyoja, the patriarch of Shugendo, it serves as the principal guardian temple of Mount Omine. Its principal image is a statue of En no Gyoja. During the Nanbokucho period it received protection from the Southern Court, and it is also listed as a sacred site on the En no Gyoja pilgrimage circuit. The temple continues to transmit the Shugendo tradition to the present day.
