History

Byakko

Myohon Ji is the oldest temple of the Nichiren sect, founded in 1253 by Saint Nichiren. Built on the site of the residence of Hiki Yoshikazu, this ancient temple has deep connections with the rise and fall of the Kamakura shogunate. Within the grounds stands a memorial pagoda for the Hiki clan, telling of the tragedies of power struggles during the Kamakura period. The grave of Wakasa no Tsubone, daughter of Ichijo Yoshiyasu and wife of Minamoto no Yoriie, also remains here, making it a must-see location for history enthusiasts. Surrounded by beautiful nature changing with the seasons, particularly with magnificent autumn foliage, this sacred space enveloped in silence welcomes many pilgrims seeking peace of mind.
