History

Byakko

Jufuku Ji is the third-ranking temple among Kamakura's Five Great Temples, founded by Minamoto no Yoriie's wife Masako to honor her late husband's memory. The founding head priest was Zen Master Eisai, who is also known as the high monk who brought tea culture to Japan. Within the grounds are the graves of Hojo Masako and Minamoto no Sanetomo, and one can feel the weight of history as a place connected to the Kamakura shogunate. The beautifully paved stone approach path is also a striking feature of this ancient temple.
