History

Byakko

Joei-ji, commonly known as Botamochi-dera, stands in Omachi, Kamakura, under the mountain name Uzan. The temple was founded in 1606 by Nun Nichiyu as patron and High Priest Nichisho as founding abbot. Its popular name derives from a legend concerning Nichiren: when he was being led to his execution at Ryugasaki, a local woman offered him botamochi rice cakes, an act of faith said to have saved his life. The principal object of worship is the Sanbo Soshi.
