History

Byakko

Ono Hachimangu Shrine in central Kobe was founded in autumn 887 CE and enshrines Emperor Ojin. After the Genpei War, Minamoto no Yoritomo honored the Kawahara brothers for their valor here by building Hoon-ji Temple with the shrine as its guardian. In the Edo period, the lord of Takamatsu, Matsudaira Yoritsune, prayed here for safe travel during his sankin-kotai journey, and his wish was granted, spreading the shrine's reputation for miraculous efficacy. Today it is revered for traffic safety and exorcism, and the White Dragon enshrined in the subordinate Benten-sha is believed to bring about fortunate meetings between people.
