History

Byakko

This Shoinji is a historic Zen temple said to have been founded in the Kamakura period. It is said that the founder was Zen Master Eisai, who is also called the ancestor of the Rinzai sect, and it is recorded that it was once a large temple boasting seven main halls. However, due to repeated wars and fires, its former appearance has been lost. Nevertheless, one can feel the weight of its history from the old stone objects remaining in the precincts and the transmitted Buddhist statues. The sound of chanting sutras echoing in the tranquil precincts purifies the hearts of visitors. It is said to grant various wishes, including academic achievement, family safety, and recovery from illness, and many people still visit to offer prayers. It was a place of training for ancient Zen monks and a space of quiet prayer.
