History

Tenpukuji, nestled in Hanashima-cho, Chiba City, is an ancient temple of the Shingon sect Buzan branch, bearing the mountain name Hanashima-san. Temple records trace its origins to 709 (Wado 2), when the monk Gyoki carved a statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu and enshrined it in a hall of worship. Known popularly as "Hanashima Kannon," the temple has drawn the devotion of local worshippers for generations. The principal wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon, designated a Chiba Prefectural Cultural Property, continues to be enshrined within the precincts today.
