History

Gyoganjj is a Tendai Buddhist temple in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture, bearing the mountain name Tozu-san and enshrining Amitabha Buddha as its principal image. The temple is renowned for the transom carving "Nami ni Houju" (Waves with Sacred Jewel), created by master carver Takeshi Ihachiro Nobuyoshi, known as Nami no Iba. This dynamic depiction of waves is said to have profoundly influenced Katsushika Hokusai's iconic woodblock print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," drawing visitors from across Japan to admire the craftsmanship firsthand.
