History

Byakko

Sokuseiji is a temple of the Shingon-shu Buzan sect located in Yunoki-cho, Ome City, Tokyo. According to tradition, it was founded by the monk Ganyu during the Gankei era (877–885), and was later patronized by Hatakeyama Shigetada during the Kamakura period. In 1587, Otani Hyogono-kami revived the temple in memory of his late father, inviting the abbot Taigen Soken of Seiunji as the founding priest of its restoration. During the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate granted the temple a vermilion-seal land endowment, affirming its prestige. The temple grounds, designated as a historic site by Ome City, and a 1473 board stele of the Thirteen Buddhas bear witness to its deep-rooted faith in the Tama region.
