History

Byakko

Nestled deep in the mountains of Chichibu, Iwanouedou is an ancient temple of the Rinzai Nanzenji school, designated as the 34th site of the Chichibu 34 Kannon Pilgrimage—part of Japan's 100 Kannon circuit alongside the Bando and Saigoku routes. The principal image of Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined within a natural rock cave, where cool air seeps through the stone walls and washes away worldly dust. For generations, those suffering from illness and misfortune have made pilgrimage here, pressing their prayers into the ancient rock face. Standing amid the moss-covered grounds, a stillness descends that feels as though time itself has stopped.
