History

Byakko

Dazaifutenmangu is a representative Tenmangu shrine of Japan, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning revered throughout the nation. Michizane was a scholar and politician of the Heian period, but was unjustly demoted to Dazaifu where he spent the rest of his life. Subsequently, as strange occurrences continued in the capital, this shrine was established to appease Michizane's wrath. Today, known as the "Deity of Learning," it has become a sacred destination visited by examination candidates and students nationwide seeking blessings for academic success. The beautiful plum blossoms of the precincts reflect Michizane's love of plum that still dwells there.
