History

Byakko

Hokuto-gu Shrine was established in 671 CE during the reign of Emperor Tenji in the area now known as Kama City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Enshrining Amenominakanushi-no-Kami, the central deity of the cosmos who presides over the Big Dipper constellation, the shrine has long served as a spiritual guide and protector from calamity. Formerly designated a prefectural shrine (kensha), the grounds feature a great camphor tree designated a Natural Monument by Kama City. Festivals are held on April 21 and October 21, drawing local worshippers to pray for good fortune and protection from evil.
