History

Byakko

Enno-ji, with the mountain name Shin'i-san, is a temple of the Rinzai school's Kenchoji branch, founded in 1250 (Kencho 2) in Kamakura. Tradition names Kuwata Dokai (Chikaku Zenji) as the founding priest, though historians note chronological inconsistencies. Enshrining Enma-o (King Yama) as its principal image, along with the Ten Kings who judge the dead, the temple is also known as the Shin'i Enma Hall. Following tsunami damage from the Great Genroku Earthquake of 1703, it relocated to its present site in Yamanouchi in 1704. The collection includes seven Important Cultural Properties, among them the seated wooden statue of Enma-o — famous for its unusual smiling expression — and the statue of Datsueba.
