History

Byakko

Saeno Shrine in Natori, Miyagi, is an ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki, a 10th-century government document that recorded officially recognized shrines of the era. Enshrining Sarutahiko no Okami and Ame-no-Uzume no Mikoto — deities of roads and boundaries — the name "Saeno" derives from an archaic word meaning "to block," reflecting the shrine's role as a divine barrier against evil. Long revered by people along the Natori River basin for protection against epidemics and malevolent spirits, the forested precincts of Ainoshima Hill preserve an atmosphere of ancient faith.
