History

Byakko

Miyaura-gu is a Shinto shrine located in Fukuyama-cho, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is one of five shikinaisha (shrines listed in the Engishiki) of the former Osumi Province, and held the former status of prefectural shrine (kensha). The shrine is situated on level ground where the caldera wall of the Aira Caldera meets Kagoshima Bay, offering a commanding view of Sakurajima across the water. Although the exact founding date is unknown, its inclusion in the Engishiki suggests a history predating the Heian period. Positioned at the strategic western base of the Osumi Peninsula, the shrine has long served as a guardian deity for the surrounding region.
