History

Byakko

I shall tell you of Osugi Jinja, the grand head shrine known as Anba-sama Sohongu, carrying 1,250 years of sacred history. In ancient times, this land is said to have been part of Unakami Province, ruling over the central-northern Boso Peninsula to southeastern Ibaraki. The principal deity enshrined here is Yamato-no-Oomononushi-Kushimikatatama-no-Ookami, a great spirit governing land development and people's prosperity. During the Edo period, the shrine gained tremendous devotion as 'Anba-sama,' the deity who banishes disease and misfortune. Faith spread through rivers and seas, leading to the construction of magnificent buildings rivaling Nikko Toshogu. The pillars and beams are intricately carved with sacred beasts like blue dragons and white tigers, creating a majestic sanctuary to carry people's prayers to heaven. The shrine became so beautiful that people said 'Visit Anba and you need not see Nikko.' Today, it is known as Japan's only sacred site for dream fulfillment, maintaining its dignity as the head shrine of approximately 670 Osugi shrines nationwide. Pilgrims continue to visit this spiritually powerful sanctuary, seeking the divine blessings of Anba-sama that have endured since ancient times.
