History
Kosan-ji in Shimonoseki is a noted temple of the Rinzai sect with a long history continuing from the Kamakura period. Particularly during the late Edo period, it is known as the place where Takasugi Shinsaku raised an army, and it is remembered in history as a place connected to the patriots of the Meiji Restoration. The beautiful main hall is designated as a National Treasure, conveying the pinnacle of Kamakura period architectural technology as a precious cultural asset. It is one of Shimonoseki's representative attractions with much to see for history enthusiasts as well as those interested in architecture.

国宝仏殿(鎌倉末期・唐様禅宗式建築としては日本最古)、山門をくぐった正面に馬上姿の高杉晋作像、五卿が潜居した書院と苔庭、歴代長府藩主(毛利家)の墓所が主な見どころです。
山門脇に無料駐車場があります。長府の街並みエリアに隣接しているため、週末は周辺道路が混雑することがあります。
