History

Byakko

Shugenji is an ancient Nichiren Buddhist temple in Hase, Kamakura, bearing the mountain name Shijosan. The temple is traditionally associated with Shijo Kingo Yorimoto, a loyal lay disciple of Nichiren. Founded in 1830 (Bunsei 13) by the nun Myoko, its former head temple was Kosokuji. The principal object of worship is the Jukai Mandala, which embodies the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. The quiet temple grounds offer respite from Kamakura's bustle, and sincere prayers for healing and family blessings have long been offered here.
