History
Toukoan is a quiet hermitage in Yoshida, Shimonoseki, deeply connected to Takasugi Shinsaku, a patriot of the late Edo period. This sacred site, where Shinsaku—who bore the elegant name "Toukoh"—rests, is visited by many history enthusiasts and those reflecting on the Restoration. Built by Ou, Shinsaku's lover, to honor his memory, this hermitage is a place of peace for the spirit of Shinsaku, who lived a turbulent life. Known also as a celebrated cherry blossom viewing spot, in spring its beautiful flowers welcome those who remember Shinsaku.
