History

Byakko

Enjuin, formally Byakkasan Enjuin, is a Shingon Buzan sect temple in Abiko, Chiba. Though its founding date is unknown, it served as the betto-ji (administrative temple) of Konogen-sha, a subsidiary shrine of Kono Daikokuten. According to tradition, Gyoki enshrined a Daikokuten image here in 964. A legend holds that Minamoto no Yoritomo was cured of a leg ailment by a deity of this shrine, prompting him to donate a shrine building. In 1918 the temple relocated onto the Kono Daikokuten grounds. A fire-walking ceremony called Saitogoma Hiwatari is held in late October.
