History

Byakko

Daigan-ji is a Jodo-shu temple located in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture. It was founded during the Tenbun era (1532–1555) under the patronage of Hara Tanehide, lord of Ominato Castle in Shimousa Province, and his wife, with the monk Hassha serving as founding priest. The temple's mountain name is Ryuzetsuzan, and its institute name is Genchuin; the principal object of worship is Amida Nyorai. From an early period, it flourished as a center of Jodo-shu scholarship, earning a place among the Kanto Eighteen Danrin academies. The temple precincts once contained a cormorant grove designated a Natural Monument of Chiba Prefecture, but the forest declined after World War II and the designation was revoked in 1974. The main hall and the study hall are currently registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.
