Enten-ji

Entenji Temple in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, was founded during the Tenki era (1053-1058) by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son Yoshiie, who prayed to Bishamonten for victory during their northern campaign. The temple was named Hatsukatsuzan Seijuin Entenji to commemorate the event. Belonging to the Shingon Toyozan school, its principal deity is Amida Nyorai. The temple rose to fame when haiku master Kobayashi Issa frequently visited during the Genroku era and composed his celebrated verse about a thin frog fighting valiantly. Since then it has been known as the haiku temple, and the Issa Festival is held each November to honor his memory.
