History
Hondoji is a renowned Nichiren Buddhist temple affectionately known as the "Hydrangea Temple." It is said to have been founded in 1277 (Kenchi 3) by Nichiro Shonin, a senior disciple of Saint Nichiren. In early summer, approximately 50,000 hydrangeas adorn the grounds, and in autumn, beautiful autumn foliage soothes visitors' hearts. Known for its beauty throughout the four seasons, it is a wonderful place where one can feel the harmony of nature and Buddhist teachings. Within its serene grounds, visitors can purify their hearts and touch the teachings of Saint Nichiren.
