Nisiteru Jinja
About
History
Nishiteru Jinja is a shrine dedicated to the moon deity, located in Waki-cho, Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture. Enshrined on the summit of Mount Otakiyama at 946 meters above sea level, it is recognized in the Engishiki (List of Official Shrines) as a Shikinaisha. The principal deity is Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (the moon god), with the three goddesses of Munakata — Takitsuhime-no-Mikoto, Tagorihime-no-Mikoto, and Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto — enshrined alongside. The tradition of pilgrims climbing the steep mountain path to receive the moon deity's blessings continues to this day. In recent years, the shrine has also become well-known as one of the four shrines in the 'Mima Mahoroba no Sato Kaiun Yonsha Meguri' pilgrimage circuit. It is a rare sacred site where visitors can seek divine protection in the closest earthly point to the heavens.
