History

Byakko

A Soto Zen temple located in Ayase City, Kanagawa, founded in 1601 by Goto Ukon. One tradition holds it succeeded the Hoоnji temple established in the Kamakura period by the Shibuya clan. Within the precincts stands the Tadekawa Kannon-do, which was relocated here in 1939 during construction of Atsugi base. During World War II, the Otasuke Kannon enshrined here was venerated as a guardian against bullets, drawing many visitors. The temple has long served as a place of prayer and solace for the local community.
