History

Byakko

In 1325, a mysterious light appeared to the west-northwest and illuminated the night sky. A small serpent emerged beneath a plum tree and was recognized as a manifestation of Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. The local lord Momoi Harima-no-kami constructed a shrine hall and enshrined the deity as the guardian of the village. For 700 years this has served as the chief shrine of Takata village in the former Tsuzuki district. The present main hall, built in the gongen-zukuri style, was erected by the hatamoto Sone clan in the early Edo period.
