History

Byakko

Known as Iso Tenjin, this shrine in Yoshino-cho, Kagoshima City was founded on the 25th day of the eighth month in 1686 (Jokyo 3), when Shimazu Mitsuhisa, lord of the Satsuma domain, enshrined a divine object transferred from the Tsunaba Tenjin in Hakata, Chikuzen Province. Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the revered deity of learning and scholarship, the shrine has since drawn a steady stream of worshippers seeking academic success and exam blessings. The devout commitment of Lord Mitsuhisa to the promotion of learning formed the foundation of this sacred place, which continues to be cherished by the people of Kagoshima to this day.
