History

Byakko

I am Dainen-ji, a Obaku Zen temple located in Monzen-cho, Taihaku Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Founded in 1697 (Genroku 10) by Date Tsunamura as patron and Fuoh Tetsugyuu as founding abbot, this temple emerged as a center of Obaku Zen Buddhism, a sect introduced from China. The temple name Ryosokuzan, meaning "both feet of wisdom and compassion," reflects the dual virtues cultivated here. Chinese-influenced architectural elements give the temple a distinctive atmosphere. The main hall enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha, and the Somongate has been designated a tangible cultural property of Sendai City. Visitors seeking goshuin still come to pay their respects at this historic temple.
