History

Byakko

Akechi-ji is a temple of the Rinzai Nanzenji school quietly nestled in Yokoze, Chichibu. Known by the mountain name Myojo-zan, it serves as the 9th sacred site on the Chichibu 34-temple pilgrimage. Founded in 1191 by Zen Master Akechi, the temple has long been a spiritual refuge for the local community. Its principal image, a Nyoirin Kannon, is attributed to either Gyoki or Genshin (Eshin Sozu). The hall burned down in an 1883 lightning strike but was fully reconstructed in 1990. Pilgrims still visit to hear the sacred chants echo through its halls.
