History

Byakko

Senba Toshogu is a Toshogu shrine located in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture. It was founded in 1619 (Genna 5) by the monk Tenkai of Kitain, who enshrined the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu here after transferring it from Nikko. It is counted among the three great Toshogu shrines of Japan, along with Nikko Toshogu and Kunosan Toshogu. The shrine buildings, designated as National Important Cultural Properties, are magnificent examples of Momoyama-style architecture featuring the gongen-zukuri style, in which the main hall, offering hall, and worship hall are connected. Throughout the Edo period, the shrine was revered by successive lords of Kawagoe Domain, and has long been a place where people pray for good fortune and success.
