History

Byakko

Nishi-muki Tenjin Jinja is enshrined in Shinjuku Ward and is a remarkable shrine dedicated to a deity of learning, as its name suggests, facing west. It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane and is believed to have acquired its name "Nishi-muki" (west-facing) from its unique orientation. Dating back to the Edo period, this historic shrine has heard the prayers of local residents for academic achievement and passing examinations. While located in an urban residential area, it has maintained a quiet and serene atmosphere. Particularly during examination season, many students visit to pray for success in their exams, earnestly seeking the scholarly blessings of Michizane. It is cherished as a community-oriented warm shrine that holds an important place in daily life.
