History

Yomeirazu Kannon-in is a Shingon (single-standing sect) temple in Oe-cho, Ibara, Okayama. Founded in 737 CE (Tempyo 9) by the monk Gyoki, who himself carved the principal image, an Eleven-Faced Kannon (Juichimen Kannon). The informal name 'Yomeirazu' (no need for a daughter-in-law) comes from the belief that devotion here allows the elderly to live out their days in good health without burdening family caregivers. As the 21st temple on the Setouchi Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, it draws worshippers from across the Chugoku and Shikoku regions for its monthly observances and the equinoctial grand festivals each spring and autumn.
