History

Byakko

Kogai Kuni Jinja is a shrine in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Social tradition places its founding in 811 (Konin 2), and it is listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho as an official shrine of Mutsu Province, Aizu District — the only shrine in the entire country bearing the name "Kogai Kuni". Though deeply associated with sericulture, scholars suggest the shrine was established not because sericulture flourished in Aizu, but rather as part of a central government policy to promote silk cultivation in the region. The shrine enshrines Ukemochi no Kami, Wakumusubi no Kami, and Amaterasu Omikami. Standing before the haiden is the Mineharisakura cherry tree, estimated to be over 1,000 years old and designated a natural monument of Aizu-Wakamatsu City. The grand festival is held on August 1.
