History
Shojoji is a Shingon Buddhist temple of the Buzanha school, also known as the Aizu Central Yakushi Hall, in Yugawa Village, Fukushima. Its mountain name is Rurikosan and its principal image is Yakushi Nyorai. The temple preserves twelve Buddhist statues dating to the early Heian period, including a nationally designated National Treasure — a wooden triad of Yakushi Nyorai. Often called the Shosoin of Tohoku, it holds an unrivaled collection of Heian Buddhist art. On April 28th each year, a nenbutsu odori dance festival is held to honor Yakushi Nyorai.
