History

Byakko

Butsuryu-ji Temple, bearing the mountain name Manisan, is a temple of the Shingon Muroji sect located in Haibara Akabane, Uda City, Nara Prefecture. According to tradition, it was founded in 859 CE (the first year of the Jogan era) by the monk Kene, a distinguished disciple of Kukai, who established a Shingon esoteric training ground at this site. The principal image is an Eleven-Faced Kannon (Juichimen Kannon). Closely connected to the nearby Muroji Temple, it flourished as a center of Shugendo mountain asceticism. During the Kamakura period it became a sub-temple of Kofuku-ji, and though much of the complex was lost to war in the Sengoku era, it was restored during the Edo period. The grounds are renowned for a cherry tree said to be over nine hundred years old, which draws many visitors each spring.
