History

Byakko

Mitsugon-in on Mt. Koya was founded in 1132 by Kakuban (Kokyo Daishi), a reformist priest who sought to revitalize the corrupted Kongobuji establishment. Kakuban practiced silent meditation here for three years. After the arson attack of 1140 (the Kirimoimi Riot), he left Mt. Koya and went on to establish Negoroji Temple, founding the Shingi Shingon sect. The current main hall uniquely enshrines the only statue of Kakuban on Mt. Koya. The Karukaya-do hall serves as the 34th temple of the Tokai Kinki Jizo Pilgrimage.
