Hiratsuka Hachimangu is an ancient shrine founded by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi to pray for victory in the Earlier Nine Years' War. It enshrines Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Takenouchi no Sukune, and has long been revered for its divine blessings of military fortune and victory in contests. In the Edo period, it served as the tutelary shrine of Hiratsuka, which flourished as a post town on the Tokaido, receiving the faithful devotion of local people.
