Tabun-ji

Tamon-ji Temple in Higashikurume, Tokyo, was formally established in 1256 (Kogen 1) by the priest Yukan, who gave it the name Hotosan Kisshouin Tamon-ji in 1395. Belonging to the Shingon Chisan school, its principal deity is Bishamonten (Vaisravana). The temple holds a tradition that Minamoto no Yoriyoshi stopped here to pray for victory during his northern campaign. Three reverse-merit votive tablets from the Muromachi period survive as municipal tangible cultural properties, and the Nanizawa Lion Dance, transmitted since the early Edo period, is designated as a municipal intangible folk cultural property. The lion dance is performed each year on October 15.
