History

Byakko

This temple is a head temple of the Soto Zen sect, founded by Zen Master Keizan Jokin, who was also called the reincarnation of Dogen Zenji, the founder of the Soto Zen sect. It once boasted such prosperity that it was ranked alongside Toji Temple in Kyoto and Hase Temple in Kamakura. Within the precincts, the Kaisando Hall and various other halls are scattered, creating a solemn atmosphere. Many ascetic monks gather here and strive daily. Its history is ancient, and numerous anecdotes remain.
