History

Byakko

Kenfuku-ji, a Rinzai Myoshinji-ha temple located in Takato-cho, Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, traces its origins to the late Heian or early Kamakura period. Tradition holds connections with the monk Mongaku, and in 1256 the Chinese monk Rankei Doryu came to revitalize the temple as its founding abbot of restoration, firmly establishing the Zen tradition here. The temple treasures a nationally designated Important Cultural Property—an ink painting of Kannon flanked by dragons and tigers. Amid the pure mountain air of Shinshu, the quiet of Zen continues to still the minds of all who visit.
