History

Byakko

Nukui Shrine, located in Nukui-minamicho, Koganei, Tokyo, was originally venerated as Nukui Benzaiten, with the clear spring-fed sacred pond at the foot of the Musashino plateau as its object of worship. Following the Meiji government's edict separating Shinto and Buddhism, it was renamed Itsukushima Shrine, then reorganized as Nukui-jinja, a village shrine. The spring water within the precincts has been selected as one of Tokyo's 57 Notable Springs. The very place name Koganei is said to derive from these ever-flowing abundant springs, once called 'Koganei' meaning golden well. Many Jomon-period archaeological sites have been found nearby, suggesting people have gathered at this land since ancient times.
